pure awesomeness points: 9 points
gameplay: 6 points
innovation (for its time): 10 points
25 points
Super Mario Sunshine:
pure awesomeness points: 2 (Fludd and the overall lameness of the setting)
gameplay: 6 points (technologically smoother than 64, but missing some classic moves)
innovation: 1 point (too similar to 64, but without the same magic)
bonus points: +8 for the secret levels. the one quite delightfully good part of the game.
17 points
Super Mario Galaxy:
pure awesomeness points: 8 points
gameplay: 8 points (great gameplay with the minor exception of the side-flip being harder to execute than in 64)
innovation: 8 (particularly for mixing 3 and 2 dimension gameplay so wonderfully, something that should be done more often)
24 points, and a lot of respect for being more than a worthy addition to the series after the legenday SM64. I don't really feel the need to compare them too much. They're both wonderful games.
Conclusion:
Super Mario 64 wins by a small margin for being so classic,
Super Mario Galaxy wins a lot of a respect from me for making me just as happy as SM64 did back in the day,
and Super Mario Sunshine.. I like to poke fun at for the many glaring crappy factors, but it was still a decent game overall. And the secret levels were some of the most fun I had during the GCN era besides Wind Waker and Melee.
What did piss me off about it a bit though was how you died if you lost a race. I mean come on, seriously?
SM64.
SMS was really great. I thought it was better than SMG. SMG was too easy.
"Start here, end here" type of game. In SMG, you would sometimes have to go back to previous levels to get a sprite once you had the proper "FLUDD" gadget or whatever they're called. It was more of a challenge.
