ok, i finally got my star by name. looks pretty cool online.
anyway, here's my question... how many of you have earned 3 stars on any courses? if so, any hints? i tried a few times to get 3 stars, but even on races where i led the entire time, the best i can get is 2. any suggestions?
Some tips: Your times should all be around the normal Staff Ghost times, try to stay in first as long as possible, don't fall off or hit edges. And use shortcuts to every possibility, even if it means being risky.

1. Stay In First (end of story).
2. Use banana's/shells as shields against Hostile R/G shells and use them as weapons that hit their target as much as possible.
3. Do NOT use fake item boxes as shields (you will regret it).
4. IMO ditch the karts for bikes (that goes double for the inside drift bikes).
5. Auto drifting = Fail do not use it.
6. Have Situational Awareness (aka. look behind you as well as in front of you).
7. If you can't finish that .... Cup go online, play another game and let your self calm down.
8. Use common sense (don't fall off the track, don't bump/scrape against the walls,).
From my experience (I have 2 triple star licenses), the ranking critgeria is broken into 2 parts:
50cc - Make you you do not hit a single environmental hazard! I have had triple star runs with like 3 blue shells a race, 57 points, etc (in 50cc). I compared them to my 60-point, 90% first place triple star runs(in 50cc). They all had the same thing in common: I never fell off or got hit by stuff like chain chomps, crushing ceilings and lava balls.
100cc, 150cc, mirror - Forget about not messing up. Only two things matter: get 60 points and STAY FIRST. There is a magic percentage for each of the modes, if you do not stay first at least that percentage of the time you will not get a triple star.
Take this as you will, I have played Grand Prix extensively, and from my experience those are the only factors. The reason people think things like falling off deduct from ranking is because falling off usually results in the CPU passing you, reducing the % of time you stayed first. I have had games where I fell off/got hit at each stage but got the triple star, just because the CPU was still unable to catch up.
