Like it does in Australia, it obviously varies. But it's not just the length of the summer break. The US school year is still much shorter than most other countries.
The only people who should act as parents should be parents or guardians. Otherwise, the product is over-dependency on power structures. It has been shown in history to further authoritarian control.

shortened summer break. so what.
when someone attends school, technically, the school is responsible for them. so, while people are in school, the school is like their parent.
School is one of the safest places to be in. I sometimes think it is more safe than my own home.....well, not exactly home, but at least my neighbourhood.
the only ones who would argue about having shortened summer breaks are the ones who don't like school. and an argument would be like one mentioned already. something that went like 'as a parent, i wouldn't like this because it would take time away from spending with my child'
bollocks. parents want their children to go to school. my parents would rather have me go to school than spend time with me. xD
