Our current War Record:

W-62 D-0 L-21

Loyalty

Dedication

Passion

Dear all,

It is now over a year since the start of Shadow Gear. Here is a quick summary of our history to date:

The 1st Generation - April 2008
==================================
Leaders: ViewtiVision, Spinout, AAAVision, GURU, Rayl
Others: Kipp, Try2KepUp,Twiggn,Augie, Saucy, Jaap, Tarantox (now Crump), Rekusa, AJ(aka spoon), Twiggy,Kryptonite

Shadow Gear started April 2008, before Mario Kart wii was released under its original founder, ViewtiVision. Viewtivision posted a clan thread in the following link:

Shadow Gear --- A MarioKart Wii Clan!!! - The Nintendo Square - Message Board

This thread quickly become google number 1 spot and fuelled our original member intake. I also managed to find ViewtiVisions original post on this forum:

www.mariokartwii.com/f26/shadowgear-one-first-largest-mkwii-clans-4389.html

Note , scroll down to see when jaap (one of our best front runners) first applied with "got all ghost staff record, 3 sec under world record, almost 9k race rating and 6.5k batte rating".

My story started around 2 weeks after the mario kart wii release date. I was/am an older developer, and massive addict of mkwii. My goal was, and remains to rise the rankings in as few clans as possible, helping that clan in whatever way with my skills. This led to several innovations in my first clan such as a custom events system/countdown in addition to on-site TT, VR and stars rankings. I quickly organised events and helped to manage the team as much as possible. I soon became a joint leader.

We became extremely popular based on all the the unique skills that the combination of our leaders had (View had design - GURU had development - AAAvision/Sinpout were almost acting as ambassadors for SG, keeping our reputation high). We had around 5 new joiners each day, a skill filter process had to be put in place which seldom pleased the majority of new joiners. Our aim was to reach the top.

Of course, i didnt "always" provide a good example of teamwork:

This generation enjoyed Clan bankai and NDA becoming familiar rivals. Often resulting in highly anticipated races on both sides.

The 2nd Generation - June 2008
==================================
Leaders: GURU, Jerk, View, Mariomaniac, Crrrrrr
Others: Flame (Cole), Norway, Rekusa, Larry

Shadow Gear just went into HYPER Gear! We began getting very serious.

Jerk filled the role of "foreign intelligence", he would become familiar with many clans and leaders, often starting large pro WWs right on SGs doorstep. SG reputation began to grow faster.

An independent "pro lounge" started to become a source for clan members rather than a no-clan zone. Crrrr (the pro lounge leader) was brought in to represent the "pro lounge" side of SG.

As the SG frontrunner Mariomaniac began to really turn on the juice, i recall him getting 52 points in a GP against The 64 Stars. At the same time, new joiner and top 10 players page racer "Cole Gilbert" started doing exactly the same for SG. We were consistently winning. I dont think anyone other than cB, uN, or the MK64Stars could really challenge us during this era.

Tactics began to enter the game, practicing pre-determined course lists and even adjusting team characters/vechicles to suit the courses. Although, I do recall one occasion where the leader of WWA (sorry morgrif, but it was funny) used magik kruisers and attempted Shy Guy Beach and Sherbert land. That didnt work out to well:

At the end of the second generation, a new clan began to form "Unity". Our earliest encounters were rather successful:

The 3rd Generation - August 2008
==================================
Leaders: GURU, Doom, Saucy, Roland
Others: Trogdor, Odin, Rage, Israel, Nick Meade, Ashe, Lorens,Chaos,shteug, Rekusa, MissWhore

A new thread for the new clan generation after viewtivision decided to leave to persue his own clans:
www.mariokartwii.com/f26/join-shadow-gear-google-top-10-mkwii-21859.html

This era saw racers such as Lorens,Chaos,shteug. We were really on top, everything was smooth sailing. Our racers were banging out regionals and WRs, i recall Rekusa on sherbert land regionals, chaos hitting GV number 1 WW, doom having perfected GBA BC3. Flame was still working hard for us but I will always remember this period for when Mariomaniac had decided to leave, someone who really embodied the SG spirit well.

After achieving a period of hitting all our goals and prolonged success, we began to practice less often. Several other clans began to appear ever stronger, ICE, cB/TGS, NDA and in particular, UNITY. Our process of using mass recruitment (via google) and then "filtering" our membership did not work well for SG long term, SG membership became temporary and constantly changing. I recall one pivotal moment of this era when "Jerk" departed and went on to become one of our biggest rivals of the time within a clan called unity. Certainly, a regret on my part.

Teamwork and voice communications began to become mainstream, these tactics certainly favoured the clans with persistant members. Absence of them would put you at an instant disadvantage. Front running began to take second place to the teamwork around retaining the important items. Depthful studies into item behaviour meant that Unity certainly stole the show for this period. SG faded as we began to lose interest having achieved all of our goals. The result, we temorarily suspended our activities:

Died: October 2008

HOWEVER, we returned:

Reborn: December 2008
www.mariokartwii.com/f26/shadow-gear-coming-back-33487.html

The 4th Generation - Xmas 2008
==================================
Leaders: GURU, Crump/Tarantox, Rekusa, Kipp, Fredgido, Tsuchura, Sponge
Others: Jaap, RYAN, Xerxes, Crush, Supa, hsoJ, joshikins, JOE, kevin, redice, Zeek

Well we came back, and were comfortably drowned in a sea of clans both new (PR, BW, AE7 ) and old (TGS, SD, NDA,MKR) operating with new team tactics. Never before have I seen so many clans in recognition that "front running" skills are such a small part of the teamwork. Gone were the days and mistakes of mass recruitment and mechanical filtering. The new SG:

- Using skype
- Increased difficulty to join, more focus on the main team as a cooperating group rather than a "refined/filtered" selection of racers.
- Top team in the GTT, highest ever points score with SG (5700)

- War record is 80% victories
- New website with alot of customisations
- Just entered the WCL

The current generation is certainly the most successful in terms of results and organisation, who knows what the future holds.

Of course, the start of the 4th gen wouldnt be the same without another guruism. Once again, sponge takes the hit:

The 5th Generation - June 2009
==================================
Leaders: GURU, Joshikins,Crump
Others: Sponge, T2K, Crump,Alvin(Ally), Cho(Ally),Aust,SteKelley,Alex

We are starting again with our OLD site (containing all of our history) together with some new development enhancements (automatic war results system).

Our unique features for this generation:

-) No skype
-) Assume or train players in item cooperation based around unique characters
-) Train a constant tactic/strategy and rotate our roles
-) Aim to preserve our 75% success rate
-) Aim to become GTT number 1 once more

I look forward to many more races with you all, and thank nintendo for this fantastic game, Regards,

GURU.
