I know Rock Band isn't as popular, even though it's made by the same people as: Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2, and Guitar Hero 80's. The Guitar Hero series went down IMO. But I think they made a big comeback with Guitar Hero Smash hits. I'm not sure if DJ hero, Guitar Hero 5, or The Beatles Rock band will be any good...
I think the Rock Band series is the best, the best game is Rock Band 2, again IMO.
I think they continued their downhill journey with Smash Hits, justified in my review of it here on this very site.
It's very unfortunate to see the Rock Band series so underappreciated, when it's clearly the better of the two series. Because of the fact that Activision kept the Guitar Hero name, the series' popularity spawned off of the first two (and a half) games whereas Harmonix had to start from scratch building a fanbase with Rock Bamd. On top of that, not only is the oversaturation of Guitar Hero titles destroying its franchise, it's also destroying the Rock Band one too. People need to jump the train (as I did promptly after Guitar Hero III) over to the Rock Band series and keep the music/rhythm genre alive.
I don't think so. Although some inspiration may have been drawn from the GuitarFreaks series with the original Guitar Hero, it was a pretty solid progression by Harmonix from their previous games, Frequency and Amplitude. The only 'clone' series as such is the continuation of the Guitar Hero series without Harmonix.
As much as I hate to say it, Rock Band is the better series (seriously, RB2 kicks ass). Even though Rock Band 2 (RB1 sucked) far exceeds most Guitar Hero games on most fronts, I will always remain an avid GH fan. A true fan never gives up on his franchise.
As such, I can't really say which is better until there are more RB games made. A frachise with 3 games versus one with 15 isn't a fair comparison.
I have played Rock band only a couple times, it was rock band 2. And while the graphics were sweet. I was not a fan of how they did the hammer-ons. I was a failure at the game. And it seemed off. It seemed a lot slower than GH in comparison to when you hit the strumbar. I was not impressed. The guy I was playing with said that it is just the way RB is setup. That if I played RB for a long time, GH would seem really fast to me. I personally think it was his TV and it needed calibrated, but he wasn't listening to that.
Anyways, I love GH. I play at least once a day. So I am going to say GH. Plus, there is a whole game dedicated to Metallica, and Metallica is my fav band. And Through The Fire & Flames... Fav song to play.
EDIT: However, about GH I will say this.... They are burning out the series. They are releasing them way too fast. GH3 came out almost 2 years ago in October of 2007. Since we have seen GH3, Aerosmith, World Tour, Smash Hits, Metallica, On Tour, On Tour Decades, On Tour Modern Hits, and soon to see a few more in the next year? Cmon seriously, make people be anticipated about a release. Make them beg for it (Like in Zelda). Dont make them say, oh its been a few months its yet ANOTHER gh game.

Well said. Of course we still have GH5, GH:VH, DJH, and BH yet to be released before the year is over...
Also, as a sidenote, GH has been around for only 4 years and Activision has already made $2,000,000,000 (yes, 2 billion dollars) in revenue. They are milking the franchise DRY.
