I prefer guitar hero. Better looking gfx and more original. Rock band copied IMO.

I think they continued their downhill journey with Smash Hits, justified in my review of it here on this very site.

It's very unfortunate to see the Rock Band series so underappreciated, when it's clearly the better of the two series. Because of the fact that Activision kept the Guitar Hero name, the series' popularity spawned off of the first two (and a half) games whereas Harmonix had to start from scratch building a fanbase with Rock Band. On top of that, not only is the oversaturation of Guitar Hero titles destroying its franchise, it's also destroying the Rock Band one too. People need to jump the train (as I did promptly after Guitar Hero III) over to the Rock Band series and keep the music/rhythm genre alive.

I don't think so. Although some inspiration may have been drawn from the GuitarFreaks series with the original Guitar Hero, it was a pretty solid progression by Harmonix from their previous games, Frequency and Amplitude. The only 'clone' series as such is the continuation of the Guitar Hero series without Harmonix.
