Why was the Emporium created?
The Mario Kart Wii Clan Emporium was thought of by me (Violet) in an attempt to try and help the mario kart wii community by clearing up the stickied topics in the Mario Kart wii clan zone. I was given permission to make this topic in order to try and combat some of the chaos.

What Does the Emporium do?
This Thread is designed to help everybody - from new members to seasoned clan leaders - in the community. I have gathered and will continue to gather every scrap of information that is invaluable to this community. I hope that this thread will be used to it's intentional purpose - even if one person finds it useful I am glad to have made it for the community .

How do I use the Emporium?
This topic consists of efforts from various key members of the Mario Kart Wii community alongside my own organization and writings. How the Emporium works is as following.

-> I have Colour coded the emporium so that it's easier on the eyes to follow.

-> Those guides which are in spoilers have been created by other users.

-> The index below will give you a hand as to where each post is located and an exact direction to the post in hand. Each post has a header and sub-heading for your guidance.

The Mario Kart Wii Clan Emporium: The rules of the Mario Kart Wii Clan Zone - Written by Violet by permission of the mariokartwii.com moderation team.

Clan Threads
Each Clan is entitled to one forum thread to represent themselves. If you are needing to make a new thread, then please consult a moderator with a link to both your old thread and their new Thread so that they can act accordingly. This rule also applies to multi-clanning; if you are multi-clanning then please consult a moderator with an explanation as to why you need two threads (EG Sub-clans).

if you have an established Clan (ie A clan which is older than one month) then you are allowed to create a secondary thread, primarily for the use of recruitment or any other secondary clan related business. Once again, if you wish to create a new thread for these purposes consult a moderator as with your main clan thread.

Behaviour
With Clan business, there's bound to be issues that arrive; either from within your own clan, or by other clans due to disagreements. If you are confronted by inappropriate behaviour: EG swearing, threats, lewd conduct, then please consult a moderator with your claim and evidence of your claim. Do not respond in the same manner as the person who is being provocative. The moderators are here to help, however they cannot solve your issues that do not break the rules.

Basic Rules
When you sign up to be with a clan, you are basically agreeing to the leadership principles of that clan. If your clan leader tells you to do something that is related to the clan, then you are, by your agreement, bound to follow it. Naturally if you do not like the conduct of your clan leader then you are entitled to leave your clan. Only if a clan leader is showing unacceptable behaviour should you report them to a moderator - it is not an offence that you disagree with your clan principles.

All other forum rules apply to this forum.

Did you know ?: Many clans tend to disband, and new clans are born. It is quite common to see larger clans disband and form into several new clans, or to take on a different name.

The most common example in the Mario Kart Wii Community is that of Clan Bankai: When Clan Bankai split, there were two fractions: The original Clan Bankai (which went under may names such as The Greatest SuperLatives and now formally known as infected with skill) and Unity. Both still notorious for their own reasons.

Mario Kart Wii Clans: Want to join a clan? Here's some easy steps how! - written by Violet.

What exactly is a Clan?
A clan is basically formed with the main purpose of gathering several players in order to play a game together. In this community, a clan consists of Mario kart players whom wish to play mario kart together. A clan in terms of this community is 100% user-orientated due to the fact that the game was never originally intended by Nintendo to be clan-friendly.

How do these clans work?
You may be wondering how clans work in mario kart. It's a pretty complicated thought, but here is the fundamental:

In order to play as a team, eg as a clan, there are rules in which the community have come up with in terms of team play. The basic idea of clans is that you try to avoid hurting your team-mates in "Clan wars" (Mario kart races) against other clans that your clan challenges. There are several ways in which team play works, which shall be covered in Clan warfare (see post 8)

The more clan wars that your clan participates in, the more active your clan is. Alternatively, clans may wish to work as a team within their own events (that do not involve other clans) or to host events that involve FFA (free for all - natural mario kart individual play).

A Mario Kart Wii clan survives on Nintendo WIFI. If you do not have Nintendo WIFI, then it is highly unlikely that you'll find purpose in joining a clan.

How do I join a clan?
Each clan has their own requirements for joining, here are some of the ways in which they may ask for potential recruits.

Asking for your stats on the game: Clans may ask how high your VR (versus rating) is. VR is basically the numbers beside your name when you log onto Nintendo Wifi and play random matches online (through worldwide or Continental / Regional). The higher that number is next to your name, the more desirable as a recruit you are. Another stat in which a clan might ask for is Star Rating. Star rating is basically how many stars you have earned by completeing offline GPs. For example, if you have achieved at least a one star ranking for each GP then you are a one star rank. Even if you only have one one star rank compared to 31 two star GPs, you are still considered a one star rank.

Asking for a "try out": A clan may wish to "try you out" to see if you fit their skill requirements. The way this works is that a clan member races against you (in which you'll need to exchange Friend-Codes). Depending on the clan, it may be a 1v1 or higher.

No requirements: As it suggests, some clans recruit without you filling in any other requirements.

Clan trends: It is an unwritten rule that clans dislike people multi-clanning. Only choose to be in one clan! Choose wisely.

Conclusions?
Be prepared to make certain commitments to the clan you join, if you join. Most likely if you are deemed as "inactive" (EG you are not online much or you don't communicate much with your clan) then you will be kicked from the clan.

Being in a clan can give you much enjoyment, but you have to work a bit for it as well. Remember to have FUN!

For a reference of all clans, please refer to the Clan Directory in which you can find in the Emporium index.

Mario Kart Wii Clans: A guide to a happy and successful clan - written by Violet.

I wish to make a Clan! What do I do?
Believe it or not, there are no restrictions to making a clan. You could literally make a clan in 5 minutes and it would be legitimate. However, would somebody want to join a clan that was made in 5 minutes? Here are some guidelines as to how to make a successful, and happy, clan.

Deciding if you're right to be a leader
You may have an awesome clan name, and ideas as to how you want your clan to work, but do you feel like you would be a capable leader? A leader requires many characteristics such as: Organization, A balanced control of power over other people, dedication to the clan, and activeness online. If you lack some of these characteristics then you may not be fit to be a leader. Examples of great clan leaders are:

Bash - Leader of Revolution
Peri - Leader of Mario Kart Racers
Legendary Luigi - Leader of Asphalt Warriors

I have chosen these examples as the way in which a member can be a great leader, yet decide to control their clans in different ways.

Alternatively, if you don't feel comfortable with having all the power, you may decide to make good use of co-leaders or to spread powers equally amongst your clan. If you designate co-leaders then their role depends on what you want them to do: EG setting up clan wars or events, looking after new members etc.

Example of co-leaders / spread of powers: White Winged Atrocity

Prettying up your clan - Clan names and graphics
People are more attracted to a clan that looks pretty than a clan that doesn't. Think of a clan name that's original yet conveys a powerful meaning. Shorter Clan names such as Unity, Star Dashers, Evul etc tend to work more than overly long names.

As well as clan names, the look of your clan is important as well. Say if your clan name is Dark Stallions, then create graphics that represent this name: EG black colour theme, perhaps a horse as your logo. The more graphics you have that look nice, the more people your are bound to attract.

If you don't know what graphics are, or can't make graphics, then there are many opportunities to ask for graphics in this very forum: Refer to graphics shop

Organizing your Clan Thread
You may need more than one post to put all of the information that you need people to know.

Want to show how your clan deals with events, membership, etc? You'll need more posts to organize your information. Look around the forum to see how each clan organizes their thread to get some ideas.

Conclusions
These are some basic ideas that will help you set up your clan to be open to the public. Give your clan some time - members tend to come in droves once they are secure whether they would fit in this clan or not. Advertise your clan, be patient, and be willing to make some sacrifices in order to get a happy and successful clan. Your attitude to clans will determine who and how the clan survives.

For more help with clan threads, refer to making a clan part 2 originally by Millsy.

Did you know ?: All types of clans are successful in their own ways, don't ever feel like your clan fails if you try. For examples of clans that were founded on this website: From those whom have been around for a long time - such as White Winged Atrocity - to those whom are very successful in terms of the calibre of players - such as Evul.

There are also very successful clans whom are not based on this forum - Clans such as Kira Team and Bullet Bills are very notorious clans. Other clans whom are known around this forum include Dash team etc.

Each clan, with the effort of the leader and the members, are successful in their own ways. Here's to happy clanning!

The mechanics of Clans: How Clans operate - written by Violet.

What is Clan warfare?
Clan warfare is basically the practice of clans asking each other for matches. These matches can either be considered as official (EG the results of the game are recorded on their clan records) or as friendlies (sometimes known as scrimmages) in which there is no need to take the war as seriously.

Here are some basic fundamentals of how wars work:

Amount of people playing: Sometimes wars can be from 3v3, to 6v6. Knowing how many people you need for the war is important.

Amount of GPs (Grand Prix) played : The length of a war is dependant on how many GPs the clans agree to play. The average length of a war tends to be 3 GPs.
track rules: There are rules as to what tracks you may pick in a clan war. The two clans may decide to either: Pick entirely random courses, or to "vote no repeat". What "Vote no repeat" means, is that if you choose a track (eg N64 DK jungle parkway) and it gets chosen on the selector, then neither clan can pick that track again. Depending on the rules, there may be point deductions if they are broken.

Disconnection rules: There can either be no disconnection rules, or if somebody disconnects the GP either restarts OR the lowest scorer of the opposite clan has their score dropped to try and even the scoreboard.
time played: Pretty straight forward, this is where you organize a time that both teams can play.

Hosting: A clan decides who hosts the match: Either one of their members, or one of the opposing clan's members. It is the responsibility of this host to add all of the codes of the people playing, and to let the opposing team know when the room is open / if there are complications.

Huh? I don't get clans, even if they sound cool
Yeah, I've often wondered this myself. How is it even possible to play as a team in Mario kart? You can't control where your items go? The answer to that is that although you cannot stop item hits completely, you can try and prevent your team-mates from getting hit if you practice item-control. Here are some simple tactics:

Holding blue shells: If you know that one of your clan mates is in first, then don't shoot the blue shell. 1st place is a LOT more valuable than if you move up a spot, it would cost your team more.

Red Shells: Obviously don't shoot a red shell if your team mate is in front of you. If you're feeling bold, you may wish to slow down so that you red-shell the opponent instead.

Holding items behind you: If you know that your team-mate is behind you, then don't hold items behind you. It will decrease the chance of them slipping into your defences, and as they are on your team you don't need to act so defensive.

Co-ordinating item attacks: If your team has protecting items such as mega shrooms, stars, bullet bills etc, and one of your team has a lightning. Then try to organize it so that you damage more of the opposite team than your own. For more on this, refer to the Unity Shock Tactic.

Communication between your clan mates: You may wish to set up a clan plan, or to talk during your race by voice communication. Many clans either use Skype, or ventrilo.

Terminology
Here are some abbreviations / terms that are thrown around a lot in the community

Line:Line refers to the way in which a player races on the track. If a player can take corners sharply, find the best possible route in which to do the course, then they are referred to as having good line. TTing (time-trialling) helps in forming a good line.

front-running: Where people whom are very good at racing (EG have good "line") tend to go for the top positions in a race. Front-runners are meant to gun for first place.

Middle-men: For those racers whom aren't as good as front-runners, yet can hold their own in the middle of the pack. Having good item control is vital if you're a middle-runner as hurting your own team is very high in this area.

Sandbagger: The sandbagger of the team is basically those players whom use items to determine the outcomes of the race: EG lightning, golden shrooms, bullet bills. It can be very resourceful to sandbag on courses which are short and so are very item reliant; EG moo moo meadows.

item-rape: Item rape is basically a term created by disgruntled players (as we all get with mario kart!) when they have fallen victim to being hit several times by players with their items.

course abbreviations
Here are some MOAR abbreviations / terms that are thrown around a lot in the community. Click the spoiler.

Track picking

Tracks that can be picked generally fall into three categories; "item-rape" tracks, frontrunning tracks, and team tracks. Of course clans have their personal preferences when it comes to track picking, and often craft their track list (a list of preferred tracks to pick when going into a vote no repeat clan war) to their member's liking. This is just a general and simple guide to the type of tracks there are, helped by Crrrrrrr.

Popular tracks
Popular tracks are usually popular for these reasons; a decently long track (takes more than 2 minutes to complete 3 laps), requires skill in "line" to differentiate between players, and is generally a course that isn't as unpredictable as shorter less tight courses. These types of courses include:

RR BCwii BC3 BC64 MR MT CM RDS DKJP MC3

Alternatively, popular tracks aren't always that cut and dry, Mario Raceway is a fairly well-chosen track yet is very dependant on the item wheel, and coconut mall is often not chosen for clans whom have more "natural skill" within their players.

Respected tracks
These tracks aren't that well chosen, yet they are deemed as acceptable or not as heavily frowned upon within clan wars and fixtures. Some of these tracks are unpopular due to the fact there are more desired tracks to be played, or simply because they aren't as "tricky" as other courses. It isn't unlikely to find some of these tracks on clan track lists:

Toad's Factory, Koopa Cape, Peach Gardens, Waluigi Stadium, DK Mountain, DK Snowboard Cross / Summit,

Avoided tracks
These tracks are generally avoided due to their easy difficulty, unpredictability, or just are just generally uninteresting.

LC, MMM, MG, MC, WGM, DC, GV, DDR, PB, YF, SL, SGB, DH, RMC

Front-running courses
If you're a front-runner, 9 times out of 10 you're going to use a heavyweight. This heavyweight is also most likely to be Funky Kong, if not, then Rosalina. Longer-tracks are more favourable towards heavyweights and thus deemed as front-running courses. This list includes tracks that favour front-running as well.

TF, CM, WGM, DC, KC, MT, GV, MVH, BCwii, RR, GV2, WS, BC3, DKM, BC64

Team / Shock courses
These are courses that are good for using the power of lightning (see more: Unity Shock Guide) due to areas in which you can devastate the player you're targeting, or your clan members can protect themselves in order to get higher positions.

MG, TF, DKS, WGM, MT, BCwii, RR, WS, DKJP, DKM

"Item-rape" courses
These course are just plain unpredictable, it's hard to front-run 100% successfully, and you'll need to sandbag quite a bit.

LC, MMM, MC, DDR, PB, YF, MR, SL, SGB, DH, DKJP, RMC, MC3, PG
