Our story opens on a rooftop in Metropolis. Shadow sits cross-legged on the edge of the building, slowly scanning the city below. Car horns blow softly in the background. Shadow remains quiet and stands to his feet. Faintly, he hears the sound of screeching tires and gunshots. He looks around more intently to find the source of the noise. He eventually spots red and blue lights shining up the walls of a building a few blocks away, but sees no police car nor the getaway vehicle he expected to see. He loses interest in the chaos going on and sits back down. He wanders in his thoughts and memories, still troubled by his life's past. A faint image of Dr. Gerald Robotnik enters his mind. Then he sees Maria... Then Sonic... Then Rouge...
He hears the gunshots louder this time and breaks his trance.
"What the hell are those humans-" He spots a blue streak speeding by in the streets below.
"Ph. All that does is give a chance to Sonic to soak up more glory for stopping them... Sonic is so predictable."
He sees the streak zigzag around cars and heads for the mayhem. Shadow's curiosity and jealousy of Sonic's fame quickly gets the best of him.
"I'd better make sure that fool doesn't hurt himself."
Shadow stands, fixes his gloves and leaps off the building. He enters a roll and zooms down the side of the building. Near bottom, he propels himself off the side and lands on the sidewalk below. After a short pause, he slowly goes from a jog to a run. He kicks his heels together to initiate his shoe-rockets and begins skiing across the concrete. The screeching tires and sirens begin to get louder.
"Now where are they...?"
He then sees a beat-up sedan and later 2 cop cars come flying around a corner a couple blocks down in the same direction Shadow was heading. He begins to run faster, hoping to cut off the getaway vehicle before Metropolis Bridge, the busy highway above water that leads to the other side of the Fixion River. He begins to close in on the chase and sees Sonic running around the corner in hot pursuit. Sonic turns his head and notices Shadow.
"Shadow! You coming to help with the chase?"
"No. I've come to make sure you don't hurt yourself. I personally don't care about the outcome of this chase."
Sonic rolls his eyes with a smile and continues running.
"Just a tip, Sonic... If you plan on catching the suspects, you'd better make sure they don't make it to Metropolis Bridge. It'll be hell trying to stop a car going at 110 mph on a busy freeway above water."
"I thought you didn't care about the outcome..."
"I'm just giving you a pointer. If you're gonna criticize my advice then I won't bother helping you anymore."
"Regardless as to whether they make it to the bridge or not, I'll still need some additional assistance with these guys."
"Fine. I've been needing some action lately."
They both continue their pursuit, hoping to reach the fleeing vehicle in time.
