much better than E's way in E's way i was getting pissed of it cut half my render away

yes! ... but it only works best on large images, say at least 800x800? (around there)
and you can always scale it down, when you're done
i don't know if there are such options with GIMP, but in Photoshop, if the background is white, you can just use the magic wand tool. but before deleting i prefer going to selection>expand so i don't get that white line on the edge. however, if you have an image with a quite "grunge-ish" background, yet which contrasts your render, you can use the megnetic lasso tool and click every now and then.
