Well I have just dowloaded some new brushes for Gimp so I got this Diddy Kong Render I made and I started off from there! I think I did very good for a first try so here it is:
What do you think?

you're getting to depth man! here's what you should try:
1. make a new layer above all the other ones
2. make a black/whit gradient on it. white being where the focal point. if the FP is in the middle then use the radial gradient
3. set the layer mode to overlay and adjust the opacity till it looks good
that should make some depth come out. also, use some C4Ds around the edges and behind the render etc.
