CLEVELAND - Clevelanders gathered Wednesday night at the House of God Church to pray for the victims of accused serial killer Anthony Sowell, whose house of horrors is just one block from the church.
Ironically, members of the congregation had tried to help distressed women in the neighborhood like 31-year-old Telacia Fortson, whose family fears she may be one of Sowell's victims.
Rev. Catherine Bryant says "we would be very saddened to know that this young lady, this beautiful young lady who has touched us very dearly because we have known her in a very personal way."
Wednesday morning, Anthony Sowell was arraigned on five counts of aggravated murder and a Cleveland judge ordered that he be held without bond.
In Sowell's neighborhood, there is sympathy for the families of the victims and surprisingly, the alleged serial killer himself.
A man speaking at a prayer vigil told the crowd "ease their hearts and ease their emotions, touch their hearts and touch their temperment and I know it's hard lord, but we begin to step to approach you Lord without forgiving him, I know we don't want to say we forgive him Lord for what he has done but we've got to if we want to get to the kingdom."
The Cuyahoga County Coroner says the remains of eleven women have been found in Sowell's home, and it appears most or all of them had been strangled.
The number went up by one after investigators found a human skull hidden in a bucket in Sowell's basement.
Six of the victims have been found in Sowell's living quarters and the basement, and five were found buried in his backyard.
The first victim to be identified is 52-year-old Tonia Carmichael.
The coroner is now seeking d-n-a samples from the families of the other women who have vanished from the surrounding neighborhood.
Dr. Frank Miller says "biological relatives, preferably maternal relatives so either a child that's biologically related to one of these women or the biological mother of these women."
The family of Tonia Carmichael has joined the chorus of Clevelanders who are critical of police for not noticing that so many women had disappeared.
But Cleveland's chief of police denies that cases involving people with difficult backgrounds have been a low priority.
Chief Michael McGrath says "any time somebody disappears in our city, be it a young child or a homeless person, you know we consider them all very important because they all have family members that are missing them, bottom line."
Cleveland Police and the coroner's office will continue their search for bodies at some point but they are not revealing when. They do say one of the priorities is finding the body that goes with the skull that was discovered earlier this week.

Lt. Tom Stacho with Cleveland Police confirm with Fox 8 News that Anthony Sowell has been charged on five counts of aggravated murder. Sowell has also been charged with rape, felonious assault and kidnapping.
He will be arraigned on all charges at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4 at the Cleveland Justice Center.
Chief Michael McGrath confirmed at the press conference, that a total of 10 bodies have been found on Sowell's property, including a skull that was wrapped in "some type of fabric" and found in a bucket.
McGrath also said that authorities would return to the scene tomorrow -- with the fire department -- to search in the walls and ceilings. "We won't leave until we search everything," said McGrath.
But, that does not mean the police won't find more. Lt. Tom Stacho tells Fox 8 News, "The body count is ever changing."
A high-ranking authority on the scene told Fox 8 News Reporter Dave Nethers that "while Sowell is not cooperating with the investigation, he did tell authorities information that led them back to his house."
Even more unsettling, Chief McGrath's opinion on possible reasoning behind the killings. "It appears that this man had an insatiable appetite that he had to fill, that's how it appears and everything is right there at that location."
Authorities also tell Fox 8 News that they will continue to search the backyard of Sowell's house, and then begin to search inside of his home.
Fox 8 News crews stationed outside Sowell's Imperial Avenue home report two body bags were taken from the backyard of the home on Tuesday by officials from the Cuyahoga County coroner's office.
Throughout the day cadaver dogs walked the backyard searching for any additional remains of potential victims.
Cleveland Police have set up an investigation tent in the backyard of the home, and according to authorities, police plan on remaining at the home for the rest of the night.
According to Fox 8 News crews on the scene, a backhoe was used to dig up portions of the yard.
Authorities also were searching vacant homes within a few miles of the home, which sits in a crowded inner-city neighborhood of mostly older houses.
Police did not say Tuesday why they were searching the vacant homes or indicate whether they believe more bodies could be found.
Neighbors are bracing for what could be inside a boarded-up home across the street and a shuttered school a block away.
"We hope they don't find anymore," said Renee Cash, whose family operates Ray's Sausage, which sits next door to Sowell's home.
Hundreds of Clevelanders gathered outside the Sowell home on Monday night for a candlelight vigil for the six women whose remains were found in and around the house.
The image of families holding up pictures of women who have vanished since Sowell was released from prison in 2005 was haunting.
One tearful woman told the crowd, "I believe my mother is going to be one of these women that's missing. She went missing from 118th and Kinsman, right around the corner."
I want to know how nobody found out. Apparently there was a foul smell coming from the home. People had complained about it. The police had been to this house. Everyone who was missing was from this neighborhood and most lived on this road. They have yet to identify all the bodies. They ended up raiding the house when a victim escaped. She was raped as were the rest of the victims. They found several bodies in the house which were decomposing. They then took backhoes and tore up the yard, and found a total of 11 bodies (including the ones in the home) They are still trying to use electronic technology to scan the walls and floor to see if they need to tear up walls and floorboards in the home to find possibly more bodies. The man has already gone to court for his arraignment. He was obviously denied bail. The judge concluded with saying this was the worst thing he has ever seen while on the bench. There are more details being released. This happened not very far from where I live (15 minutes). This is a shock to everyone here.

That's horrible. I wouldn't know what to do in your situation. I have an alarm system in my house, so I would have to rely on that and only leave the house when I had too. I suggest getting an alarm system if you don't already have one.
I'm not worried. It really isn't my situation as I am not in the people he targetted. Just happened in my area.
I live in a rural town outside of where this happened. I also live in an apartment so an alarm system wouldnt be possible. I'm also moving to NY in 3 weeks.

He has already been arrested. But I believe he was targetting women of a certain age group. I think most of them were mothers as well. Many of the victims have yet to be identified. Most are being identified by people who have missing family members going up to the coronors office and giving a DNA sample. I think they've only identified 6 so far.
As it turns out, one of the women we were hired to find a few months ago.
For those who don't know, I work as a Private Investigator. I work in the office. I make phone calls and use databases to try to find people. Mostly we try to find people who are dodging subpoenas or people who have failed to make their car payments and we need to find them so we can repossess their cars. We sometimes do have cases of where someone wants to find their birth parents or maybe an old girlfriend/boyfriend. We were contacted back in May to try to find a girl who was thought to be in hiding somewhere. It turns out she was the first body that was identified. This is why we never found her.
