The Official Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Thread (HG & SS)
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are the newest Pokemon games that are remade from Pokemon's second generation of games, Pokemon Gold and Silver. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver will be released on DS on the 12th of September for Japan, and sometime in 2010 for the US and the rest of the world.
The games are exactly the same as Pokemon Gold and Silver, where the player can travel through both Johto and Kanto, just like in the older games. HeartGold and SoulSilver follow the same storyline as Gold and Silver, with you winding up foiling one of Team Rocket's disastrous plans.
Although it closely follows the storyline of Gold and Silver, many new features have been added to this remake, just like new features were added to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, the remakes of Pokemon Red and Green/Blue. The game mechanics of HeartGold and SoulSilver have been up to the 4th generation standards, including graphics. A extraordinary feature added to HeartGold and SoulSilver is that you are allowed a partner Pokemon that follows you around in the games (See Partner Pokemon for more information). This has been requested by many Poke Fans over the years and the feature may well be the favourite so far.
Areas that were in Johto previously are still around, while many new areas are unveiled. In addition, legendary Pokemon that do not originate from Johto are now found in the area, like Kyogre in HeartGold, Groudon in SoulSilver, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina.
When you buy Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is packaged with a peripheral object known as the PokeWalker which will allow you to transfer one Pokemon (through infra-red technology) from your HeartGold and SoulSilver games to it so you can train it up in your everyday lives. See PokeWalker for more information.

Partner Pokemon
Pokemon Yellow introduced a new feature where the Pokemon that Professor Oak gave you (which was always a Pikachu) would follow you around and you could talk and interact with it. This feature wasn't brought back into the Pokemon games in future generations (except in Amity Square which was featured in Pokemon Pearl, Diamond and Platinum) but it makes a return in the remakes of Pokemon Gold and Silver, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Your partner Pokemon is not limited to your starter Pokemon, however.
As soon as you retrieve your Pokemon from Professor Elm in HeartGold and SoulSilver, he will inform you that you will be able to have your Pokemon follow you outside of its Pokeball. This is also not limited to small or 'cute' Pokemon, every single Pokemon can walk alongside you in HeartGold and SoulSilver. From Bulbasaur to Arceus. All you have to do to have a partner Pokemon follow you is have it at the top of your party.
You also have the ability to interact with your partner Pokemon, you can see if its happy, or mad, or just feeling moderate. All you have to do is talk to your Pokemon.
Pokemon will also find items on the floor while they follow you on your adventure. Similar to that of Amity Square, all you have to do is talk to your Pokemon to retrieve the item it has. Items are limited to that of potions and status healers.
PokeWalker
When purchasing your copy of Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver, you will also get a packaged item called the PokeWalker. The PokeWalker allows you to transfer one Pokemon from your HeartGold or SoulSilver games and train it up while you walk around in your everyday lives. The PokeWalker is a pedometer, so as you walk around, the Pokemon you choose to train will level up and ascend its happiness.
Asyou play on your PokeWalker you will come accross mini-games of sorts. These mini-games will have effects on your Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver games; one of the mini-games includes finding items while you're walking (items like Potions, etc.) You will also come accross wild Pokemon while you are raising your Pokemon in the PokeWalker. It is currently unknown whether you battle the wild Pokemon in tha same way as the main games.
There appears to be up to three spots on the PokeWalker and you will send the Pokemon directly from your PC boxes. You can keep track of many variables through the PokeWalker, such as how many steps you've taken, which are called Watts. The more Watts you have - the more areas you can access.
When selecting your Pokemon to travel to the PokeWalker, you'll have to choose a path that you're Pokemon must walk. There are many areas you can access at first, with more being unlocked the more you walk. You will have two areas you can access at the start: Refreshing Field and Noisy Forest. More areas will be unlocked when Pokemon are transferred to the PokeWalker.
To battle your PokeWalker Pokemon, you must use the PokeRadar which is only obtainable when you build up enough Watts throughout your PokeWalker journey. Four grass figures will appear on your PokeWalker and if you touch one where a wild Pokemon is hiding, you must enter a battle. Battling method for the PokeWalker is currently unknown.
In-game Events from Event Pokemon
When Event Pokemon are transferred to your Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver games, they may trigger in-game events. When you obtain the 'Event Arceus', a new area is unlocked where you will meet Cynthia from Sinnoh, who will let you select one of three Pokemon - Dialga, Palkia or Giratina, all at Level 1.
If you send over the 'Event Pikachu Coloured Pichu', when you reach Ilex Forest and have the Coloured Pichu at the top of your party, you will meet the Notched-Ear Pichu and after a small bit of play with the Coloured Pichu, the Notched-Ear Pichu will join your party.
The last Event Pokemon that we know triggers an even is the 'Event Jirachi', who can be obtained accross DS Download Stations in Japan. If you transfer the 'Event Jirachi' to your Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver games, new areas will be unlocked. The areas that are unlocked when you obtain the 'Event Jirachi' are currently unknown.
